Cathedral’s Vincent Atilano lost his California lead in the 300 hurdles, but gained a first, and national standing, in another at the 64^th Mount San Antonio Relays over the weekend.

Atilano eschewed his usual 300 race, in which his :37.42 ranked first until a runner from Eastvale Roosevelt ran :37.06.  The Dons’ senior instead entered a 400 hurdles race and his time of :53.56 is No. 1 in the state and fifth in the U.S this season.

San Diego Section athletes turned in several outstanding performances at the meet in Walnut, with six season bests in girls competition and five in boys.

Mt. Sac was the last major invitational as athletes now move into a final week of dual meets or league  finals, leading to the 104^th state meet at Buchanan High in Clovis May 24-25.

Opening event of the marathon 56^th Arcadia Invitational was Friday afternoon, April 4, followed by a Saturday spectacular that goes from not long after sun-up to late-night TV.

San Diego Section boys and girls Friday participated in many events, some with four classifications, Invitational, Open, Seeded, and Rated.  “Rising Stars” events below, usually are reserved for freshmen or promising upper class entries.

Arcadia, probably  the premier meet in the country, signals the start of the season’s second half, ending under a usually warmer than warm sun in the 104th state meet at Clovis’ Buchanan High May 24-25.

Elijah Jefferson’s quest for a record, third consecutive state meet 100-yard dash championship was short circuited by the blindingly fast start (a “flyer”, some suggested) on the Balboa Stadium track by Kevin Williams of San Fernando.

Jefferson had tied his  meet record of :09.4 in the trials and Williams, known for tremendous acceleration at the sound of the starter’s pistol, or before, had won his heat in :09.5.

Williams’ :09.4 victory in the final tied the record first set by Santa Rosa Montgomery’s Mel Gray in 1967, equaled by Jefferson in 1974 (he also was first in 1973) and by West Bakersfield’s Joel Andrews in 1975.

Billy Mullins of Los Angeles Hamilton won the 220 championship in :21.1, with Jefferson fifth in :21.4, behind Williams’ fourth-place :21.3.

Jefferson went onto to compete for the University of Arizona.  Williams returned to ‘Fernando in 1976 but was disqualified for a false start in the state 100 finals in Berkeley.

Williams had an excellent football and track career at USC but died at age 38 in 1996.

Williams was employed as a railroad brakeman and was killed with another brakeman when the train on which they were working derailed and crashed in flames in a steep canyon on the Cajon Pass north of San Bernardino.

WOODS EDGES HUNT

Vista’s Jay Wood scored a rare victory over Patrick Henry’s Thom Hunt in the state mile, finishing third in 4:10.8, with Hunt fifth in 4:11.2.

Woods did not qualify out of the San Diego Section meet in the two-mile. Hunt won in 9:11, but Hunt finished 19^th in 9:30.2 in the state meet, behind Crawford’s Glenn Best, 18^th in 9:27.2

Hunt had season bests of 4:07.8 in the mile and 9:02.6 in the long race.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE FINALS, @GRANITE HILLS

Christian scored 106 points, 50 more than Army-Navy, and won the team championship.

The Patriots were first in nine events and set two individual records, Edwards with a 4:40.9 mile and Blyth with 10:30.6 two-mile.

AVOCADO LEAGUE TRIALS, @VISTA

Jay Woods of Vista had the day’s best mark, 1:58.5 in the 880. Thomas of Vista clocked :50.5 in winning a 440 heat.

GIRLS SAN DIEGO SECTION QUALIFYING, @POWAY

Kathy Devine was off her national record holder form of 52 feet, 3 inches, with the shot in 1974, but finished far ahead of the field with an eight-pound shot put of 46-6.

GIRLS SAN DIEGO SECTION QUALIFYING, @MADISON

Grossmont’s Carolyn McDonald was a double winner with a 2:23.6 880 and 5:32.2 mile.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE TRIALS, @GRANITE HILLS

“I had a hard workout Monday and I just using this as another one,” said Helix’ Steve Wiggins, who was attempting an 880-440 double and eased to victories in 1:59 and :50.

“I’ll go hard in the 880, then if disaster strikes I still have the 440 to fall back on, said Wiggins.”

El Cajon Valley’s Mark Malone led shot putters at 58 feet and discus throwers at 168-11 after a 195-foot attempt in practice.

Mount Miguel qualified 21 for the finals, Grossmont 20, and Helix, 18.

EASTERN LEAGUE FINALS, @BALBOA STADIUM

Ned Armour of Morse was a triple winner.  Armour’s victories were in the 120 high hurdles (:14.5), 330-yard lows (:38.6), and long jump (22 feet, 8 inches).

Elijah Jefferson of Crawford and Thom Hunt of Patrick Henry were double winners. Jefferson ran :09.7 in the 100 and :21.4 in the 220 and Hunt logged a 4:15.7mile, second fastest in the state, and 9:14.2 in the two-mile.

Crawford’s Phil Hendrick was second to Hunt in each race in 4:16.5 and 9:16.7.

Jefferson also ran a leg on the Colts’ 440-yard relay, which turned in a state-leading time of :41.8 and Armour helped Morse to a second-place finish in :42.4.  Lincoln was third in :42.5

METROPOLITAN LEAGUE FINALS, @CASTLE PARK

Lennie McNeill of Sweetwater took down a league record that had stood since 1937, leaping 23 feet, 2 ½ inches in the long jump, landing beyond the 22-8 7/8 by Oceanside’s Bill Huntales 38 years before.

Montgomery’s Clint Bradburn turned a meet record :49.5 440.  Fifteen minutes later Bradburn with a best of :39.1, was a nonqualifying fourth the 330 low hurdles in :40 as Castle Park’s Bob McCurdy won in a league-record :39.4, bettering the :39.5 by Bradburn in the trials.

WESTERN LEAGUE FINALS, @BALBOA STADIUM

Don Brown, struggling to find his alignment with the 30-inch barriers (“step” in more esoteric terms), had suddenly took the County lead the previous week with a :38.4 race in the 330-yard lows.

The Clairemont athlete, known primarily as a quartermiler, turned around and lowered his mark to :37.9.

Kearny’s Mike Bussey was a double winner in the 100 and 220 at :10 and :22.2 and anchored a :42.5 victory in the 440 relay.

AVOCADO LEAGUE FINALS, @VISTA

Oceanside’s Arvli Ward, with bests of :10 and :50.5 coming into the meet, ran the 100 in :09.9 and 440 in :49.6.

Jay Woods of Vista edged Shannon Laird of San Marcos, 4:18.3 to 4:18.4, in the mile, and doubled back with a 9:28.6 two-mile victory.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE FINALS, @GRANITE HILLS

Steve Riggins’ quest for an 880-440 double was in place until Mike Cardwell of Mount Miguel stormed past the astonished Riggins in the last 100 yards to win the 880 in 1:55.7, with Riggins clocking 1:55.9.

“I saw Riggins’ mouth drop open as I went by,” Cardwell told Nick Canepa of the Evening Tribune.  “I knew I had him then.  He’s been saying all week than no one can catch him over the last 220.”

Cardwell also got Mount Miguel off to a good start with a :49.6 opening leg in the mile relay, in which the Matadors set a meet record of 3:24.8 after Riggins returned to win the 440 in :49.4.

Mark Malone of El Cajon Valley and Kris Lettow of Helix waged duels of weights.

Malone hurled the shot 58-11 ½ and discus 170-8, Lettow 56-11 1/2 and 170-5, respectively.

Helix won the team championship with 50 points to Grossmont’s 48, and Mount Miguel’s 41.

SAN DIEGO SECTION TRIALS, @BALBOA STADIUM

Crawford and Patrick Henry each had 11 qualifiers, followed by Vista, 9; Morse, Lincoln, and Bonita Vista had  8 each.

Kearny’s :41.8 in a 440 relay heat tied for first in the state with Crawford.  The Colts’ Elijah Jefferson posted a :09.6 100 into a 4.5 miles-an-hour wind, eased to a :21.7 220, and helped Crawford to a :41.9 relay win.

Helix’ Steve Riggins (1:54.3) topped Henry’s Paul Becklund (1:55.7) with a career-best 880, and Riggins made it a double with a :49.4 440.

The two leaders in the mile, Vista Jay Woods (4:15.7) and Henry’s Thom Hunt (4:16.5) won their heats.  Mount Miguel logged a county best 3:21.9 in the mile relay.

SAN DIEGO SECTION FINALS, @BALBOA STADIIUM

Patrick Henry scored 27 points, Crawford 25, Morse 23, Santana 22, and Helix 20 in spirited battle for the team championship.

The meet started fast, with Crawford’s :41.5 440 relay, tying Lincoln’s 1968 record.  Kearny was second in :41.9, followed by Lincoln, :42.1, and Patrick Henry and San Diego, each at :42.7.

Elijah Jefferson set a record of :09.5 in the 100 and smoked the Balboa curve and straightaway for a :21.1 220, also a record.

Jefferson, along with San Diego’s Carl Sanford (1963) and Madison’s Bruce Girasole (1972), had run :09.6 (1973, ’74).  Johnny Mack Ellis of Lincoln had timed :21.4 in 1966.

“I talked to Johnny this week and he said the record had been :21.4 too long,” said Jefferson. “He really wanted me to break it.”

Jefferson was on a mission.  “It would be my last chance to set San Diego CIF records, so I wanted to get them.  I also wanted some fast times before the state meet.”

Donald Brown of Clairemont ran :37.6 in the 330-yard low hurdles, bettering the :37.8 in last week’s trials by Helix’ Craig Evans, who was runner-up in :37.8.

Thom Hunt of Patrick Henry won the mile in 4:13.1, topping Vista’s Jay Woods (4:15.7), and backed it up with a 9:11 victory in the two-mile.

The San Diego Section girls are 21-8 overall in the Southern California regional tournament and  guaranteed two  teams in next week’s state finals in Sacramento.  That’s because the D-IV and V finals will offer a rarity among rarities:

All four regional finalists are from the San Diego Section.

Fallbrook’s 42-35 D-IV win over Oceanside advanced the No. 7 seed Warriors (26-8) to a match at No. 4 Grossmont (26-8), which defeated No. 1 Newbury Park, 57-39. Escondido Charter (24-11), also known as the White Tigers, will meet D-V No. 1 Montgomery (24-11), which edged No. 4 Reedley Immanuel, 41-39.

Overshadowed by the success of the four surviving teams is Cathedral (23-12), a seemingly no-chance No. 16 seed that scrambled the D-III bracket with its shock of No. 1 Dana Hills, 54-45, and continued to fight through the rounds.  The Dons topped No. 8 Anaheim Canyon, 61-54, and led, 34-25, at halftime before running out of gas, or emotion, in a  54-51 loss at No. 5 Granada Hills.

Willie Banks of Oceanside and Elijah Jefferson of Crawford offered a historic footnote to the 56^th state meet in Bakersfield.

Banks and Jefferson we’re the first from the San Diego Section to win successive state championships since Chula Vista’s Tim Danielson in 1965-66 and only the second and third from the area to repeat since the first state meet in 1915.

Banks’ weekend started in disappointment when he was fourth in his heat in :14.1 in the 120-yard high hurdles, but while he tied the San Diego Section record with six others, only three in each heat qualified.

Banks was a qualifying sixth at 23-4 ¾ in the long jump and then essentially ended the competition with a 50-foot, 9-inch triple jump that broke Banks’ meet record of 49-1 and was 33 inches further than the second-place qualifier.

Banks jumped 50-7 in the Saturday final, again almost three feet further than the runner-up jump of 47-8 ¾.  He was eighth in the long jump at 23-7 ½.

“I’m happy I won but I’m disappointed with my (triple) jump,” Banks told writer John Nettles.  “I guess I was disappointed with my long jump finish and I felt sort of depressed, but I still felt I could have done better.”

Banks later posted career bests of  24-2 3/4 and 51-3, respectively,  in the Golden West Invitational in Sacramento.

Jefferson, after scorching the Bakersfield track with a record-tying :09.4 in the 100-yard dash in Friday trials, beat the field again on Saturday in :09.8, but did not run the 220.

“It’s great to win this thing two years in a row,” said Jefferson after officials huddled for almost 10 minutes to determine if Jefferson or Mike Simmons of L.A. Carson had won. “I had a great start and felt I was ahead all the way, but I could hear them coming”.

Jefferson felt a twinge in his leg when he qualified at :21.5 in the 220 Friday night and did not in the run in the final.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE TRIALS, @GRANITE HILLS

El Capitan’s Curt Hampton set a league record with a 64-5 ¾ shot put, bettering the 63-4 by Granite Hills’ George Brown in 1967.

The eighth qualifier in the shot reached 51-2 ¾, good enough to win several league meets.

One of the shot putters was El Cajon Valley’s Mark Malone, fourth at 53-8 ½, and first with a discus toss of 165-7.

Tom Smith of Granite Hills had the day’s fastest mile, 4:21.2.  Tim Earle of Granite Hills won a heat in 4:23.9 and Monte Vista’s Bill Bunting led with a 6-6 high jump.

—Mike Grein of Poway was a double winner in the high hurdles (:14.6) and broke his school record (:19.9) with a :19.7 clocking in the lows, but Mission Bay won the Coast League dual meet, 64-63.

—Willie Banks’ 23-foot, 6 ½-inch long jump, 47-1 triple jump, and :15.1 in the 120 high hurdles was more than enough in Oceanside’s 92-44 win over Carlsbad.

METROPOLITAN LEAGUE TRIALS, @CASTLE PARK

Sweetwater’s Jim Frankson found the usual breezes at the Trojans’ track to his liking, running wind-aided :09.6 and :21.4 in the 100 and 220.

“I wasn’t aware of the wind before the race but I knew there was some,” said Frankson.  “There wasn’t that much wind,” suggested Red Devils coach Gerry Smith.

John Sylvester of Hilltop (:22.2 220, :51.2 440) and Scott Young of Bonita Vista (:14.8 high hurdles, :20 low hurdles) also were double winners.

AVOCADO LEAGUE TRIALS, @ESCONDIDO

Willie Banks won his high hurdles test in :14.8 and Oceanside teammate Mosley doubled in the 100 (:10.2) and 180 low hurdles (:20.4).

COAST LEAGUE TRIALS, @SAN DIEGUITO

Mike Grein of Poway led all hurdlers with wins in :14.9 and :20.3. Bregy of Poway won a 440 in :51.5 after taking first in an 880 race in 2:05.8.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE FINALS, @RAMONA

Christian scored 59 points, Ramona, 55, and San Diego Military 50 in a meet in which 10 records were set and three were tied in the 3 classes.

Most notable was Ramona’s Bob Hunt, who cleared 6 feet in the B high jump, bettering a 32-year-old mark of 5-11 ½ by Gordon of Brown Military in 1942.

Donald Tavie of San Diego Military was a triple winner with a :10.2 100, :23.1 220, and 20-0 ¼ long jump.

METROPOLITAN LEAGUE FINALS, @CASTLE PARK

Jim Frankson of Sweetwater ran :09.7 in the 100-yard dash, breaking the record of :09.8 by Bill Huntales of Oceanside in 1937 and Bill Massey of Chula Vista in :1964.

Frankson also won the 220 in :21.8. but Scott Young of Bonita Vista won three events and was part of a fourth.

Young  prevailed in both hurdles events in :14.6 and :19.8, high jumped 6 feet, 4 inches, and ran a leg on the Barons’  440 relay, first in :43.6.

John Sylvester of Hilltop won a photo finish with Montgomery’s Clint Bradburn in the 440 in a career best :50.2.

EASTERN LEAGUE FINALS, @BALBOA STADIUM

Kirk Pfeffer and Elijah Jefferson were double winners for Crawford.  Pfeiffer at 4:18.5 and 9:11.6 in the mile and two-mile and Jefferson at :09.8 and :21.8 in the 100 and 220.

Pfeffer bettered the long race record of 9:13.6, set by Lincoln’s Otis Martin in 1966, and was challenged in the shorter race by teammate Phil Hendricks, who was second in 4:18.6.

Donald Moore of Morse won the 440 in :48.9 and anchored the Tigers’ mile relay team to a 3:20.6 victory, fastest in the Section this year, nosing out Crawford, which ran 3:21, ahead of Patrick Henry (3:22) and Lincoln (3:22.6).

Quinard McDonald was on the Morse relay team and also won the 880 in 1:55.7.

WESTERN LEAGUE, @MESA COLLEGE

Wayne Saxton was a triple winner :15.3 high hurdles, :19.8 lows, and 21-6 ½ long jump for Kearny, which also profited from Ron Means’ :50.5 440.

Charles Bussey of Kearny won the 100 in :10.0 but ran out of gas, as did the rest of the 220 field, which mistakenly raced for 235 yards, thanks to incorrect lane markings.

Richard Paxton of University hurled the shot 56-7 and discus 151-6 and Steve Mowry of Madison ran the mile in 4:20.5 and two-mile in 9:20.4.

AVOCADO LEAGUE FINALS, @VISTA

Willie Banks took the state lead with a 50-foot, 6 ½-inch triple jump, was second to teammate Kenny Brooks’ 22-10 long jump with a 22-6½ leap, and tied the hurdles record of :14.4 by Oceanside’s Mike Swaim in 1963.

Tim Woods of Vista ran 4:18.1 in the mile and 9:22.4 in the two-mile and Bobby Rhodes of Vista was a 10-seconds winner in the 100 and in :22.4 in the 220, and anchored the Panthers to a :43.2 photo finish win over Oceanside in the 440 relay.

GROSSMONT LEAGUE FINALS, @GRANITE HILLS

The first five finishers in the 880 were timed in 1:58.1 or better and won by Granite Hills’ Tom Smith in 1:56.1.

Smith earned a difficult double victory when he came back to win the mile in 4:17.7, nipping Tim Earle (4:17.9) of Monte Vista.

El Capitan’s Curt Hampton won the shot put at 63-4 and Mark Malone of El Cajon Valley the discus at 173-3.

COAST LEAGUE FINALS, @SAN DIEGUITO

Mike Grein of Poway won the high and low hurdles in :14.6 and :19.8 and Gary Hernandez of Mission Bay was first in the distances in 4:22.8 and 9:33.6.

SAN DIEGO SECTION TRIALS, @VISTA 

Kearny’s Wayne Saxton and Oceanside’s Willie Banks were the stars in the afternoon-evening meet, the latter offering Class B and C competition.

Banks took the national lead in the Triple Jump at 50 feet, 10 1/4 inches, and led long jumpers with a qualifying 23-5 3/4.

Saxton ran the 120-yard high hurdles in a wind-aided :14.3 and the 180 lows in a clean :19.5, and ran a leg on the Komets’ 440 relay.  The Komets’ time of :42.6 was best of the day.

Kearny did not finish the relay in the Western League finals but had been byed into the trials.

SAN DIEGO SECTION FINALS, @VISTA 

Willie Banks tripled, but Crawford, getting more than just an expected double win from Elijah Jefferson, won the team championship.

Keith Miles was second in both hurdles races and triple jump (lifetime best 46-9 ¼), and participated in the 440 relay (second) and mile relay (third).  Kirk Pfeiffer won the two-mile in 9:08.6 and was second with a lifetime best of 4:16.8 in the mile.

Crawford scored 40 points outdistancing Morse (29), Oceanside (27), and Kearny (16).

Jefferson tied the meet record of :09.6 in the 100 and won 220 on a full curve in :21.5.

Morse had four individual winners:  Donald Moore, :48.5 440; Quinard McDonald, 1:55.9 880; 440 relay, :42.2, and mile relay, 3:19.7.

Banks won the 120 high hurdles in :14.4, long jump at 23-7 ¼, and triple jump at 49-1 ½.

LADIES MAKE DEBUT

Girls’ track and field, which was introduced as a CIF-sanctioned sport in the dual meet season, was celebrated with a national record by Mission Bay’s Kathy Devine.

Devine pushed the eight-pound shot 51-1 ¼, breaking the record of 48-8 ½ by a girl from Gresham, Oregon, in 1971.

Janice Wiser of La Jolla won the 100 in :10.8 and 220 in :24.5 and Beth Howell of San Dieguito doubled in the 440 and 880.
